Psalm 51

Sometimes we sing songs in worship, but may not be all that familiar with why they were written.

When you know the story behind a song, it seems that the song carries more punch to it.

We have the privilege of knowing the background of Psalm 51, which is found in 2 Samuel 11 and 12.

David was the second king of Israel who succeeded Saul.
He was loved and adored for his military prowess.
The bible also intimates that David was easy on the eyes.
In the spring of this particular year, which was the time of year that kings would go into battle, David stayed home.

(BTW, that's a sure way to get you into trouble; when you are not where you are supposed to be)

He was up on the roof of his house when he saw a woman named Bathsheba bathing.
He was so taken by her that he called her to his home and committed adultery with her.
(Can I get a clip of this from our trip?)
Probably just a few weeks later when she discovered that she was pregnant, she sent word to David to let him know.

Everyone would know that she had committed adultery because her husband was out to war.

To try and cover up this sin, David sent word to her husband, Uriah, who was on the battlefront, and tried to arrange for him to go home and sleep with his wife.
Uriah had more honor than David and didn't think that he deserved that pleasure any more than his fellow soldiers who were still on the battlefield.
David tried one more time by getting him drunk; but still, Uriah resisted.

So David sent Uriah back to the battlefield with a concealed message for Joab, who was David's commander.
The message was to put Uriah up close to the battlefront so that he would be killed in battle.
Mission accomplished.

After a period of mourning by Bathsheba, David took her to be his wife.

David thought he had gotten away with these sins of adult ...
