Genesis 22
INTRODUCTION: One mom was out walking with her 4-year-old daughter when her girl picked up something from the ground and started to put it in her mouth. The mother took it away and said, "Honey, don't do that." The daughter asked "Why?" "Because it's been lying outside, you don't know where it's been, it's dirty and probably has germs." At this point, the daughter looked at her with total admiration and asked, "Wow! How do you know all this stuff?" Mom thought quickly and said, "All moms know this stuff. It's on the Mommy Test. You have to know it, or they don't let you be a Mommy." They walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, as she pondered this new information. "Oh...I get it!" she beamed, "So if you don't pass the test you have to be the daddy?" The mom smiled and replied, "Exactly."
Today we're going to talk about a test. It's not a Mommy test or a Daddy test - it's a test of faith.
We're in a sermon series about faith based upon the life of Abraham, the man of faith. We've talked about the call to faith, the boldness of faith, the exchange of faith (faith for righteousness) and the works of faith. Today we need to talk about the TEST of faith. (Read Genesis 22:1-15)
What's recorded in Genesis 22 is disturbing and the lessons that I'm going to draw from it are thought provoking. I've been thinking about this passage for years and years. I will tell you that of all the sermons I've heard on this incident and of all the commentaries I've read on this incident, I've never heard anyone say what I'm about to say - which simply means that you need to listen very carefully and search the scriptures to see if what I'm teaching you today is true.
I. Your faith will be tested when you are called upon to sacrifice that which you cannot afford to lose if you are wrong
