Why The Church Needs Men (3 of 7)
Series: Man Church
Steve Jones
INTRODUCTION: Eddie was a clerk in a hardware store. He made a name for himself as the most lazy and contentious salesman ever. One day he was absent and the atmosphere around the store was like a beautiful, tranquil day after a bad thunderstorm. One regular customer remarked on the difference. The owner of the store said, "Eddie's not just away for the day, he doesn't work here anymore." The customer asked, "Do you have anyone in mind to fill the vacancy?" The owner cheerfully responded, "Nope, Eddie didn't leave a vacancy."
Does the church NEED men? If all of the men were suddenly raptured out of the church, would it make any difference, would there be any vacancies?
Now we know that men need the church. Studies indicate that churchgoers are more likely to be married and express a higher level of satisfaction with life. Church involvement is the most important predictor of marital stability and happiness. It moves people out of poverty. It is also correlated with less depression, more self-esteem, and greater family and marital happiness. Religious participation leads men to become more engaged husbands and fathers. Teens with religious fathers are more likely to say that they enjoy spending time with their dads and that they admire them. Obviously, men need the church, but does the church need men? The answer is an emphatic YES but before we get to the reasons why, let's review.
I'm in a sermon series entitled MAN CHURCH and this is the kind of series where we MUST review or people just might get the wrong idea. I noticed last Sunday we had a young couple visiting for the first time and as soon as my introduction slide came up reading "MAN CHURCH" they got up and walked out. I felt like calling out to them, "Wait, wait, I can explain! She's welcome here." And I CAN explain.
If you're new to us today this is the third sermon in the series. I strongly advi ...
