Dudley Tyng was an Episcopal pastor. He lived in the mid-1800s. He was known for being a fiery preacher, a dynamic preacher, and somebody who stood strong and stood tall for righteousness. And he spoke out against evil. He was a preacher in Philadelphia. He preached a sermon in his own church on the evils of slavery. He ended up getting fired for it because the church didn't want to hear it. He preached in a YMCA noon meeting in Philadelphia in 1858. Five thousand men came. When he gave the invitation, a thousand came forward to give their lives to Christ. Two weeks later, he was involved in a very freak farming accident that ended up taking his life. And when he was on his deathbed, he whispered to family and to friends these words: "Let us all stand up for Jesus!" One of his fellow preachers and a friend of his, when he heard those words, it inspired him, and the next Sunday in his church he shared the words that have become part of a familiar hymn, Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the Cross. Lift high His royal banner, it must not suffer lost. From victory unto victory His army shall He lead till every foe is vanquished and Christ is Lord indeed. Stand up for Jesus!

We're in series called, "Footsteps: What it Really Means to Follow Jesus." And today, we want to see that what it really means to follow the Lord Jesus Christ is that you stand up for Jesus. You stand up for His Word. You stand up for righteousness. Jesus Himself said this: "If you are ashamed of Me and My words in this sinful and adulterous generation, I'll be ashamed of you when I come in power with the holy angels; when I come in My glory with the holy angels." Hey, we are called to take a stand for the Lord Jesus Christ. In His famous Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapter 5, where we get the Beatitudes, where He says, nine times, "Blessed are the....." people who are this way, and this way, and this way. ...
