INTRO: I want you to take your Bibles and be finding your place at Exodus chapter 15 if you would. Exodus chapter 15, and I want to focus in this morning really on just one little part of one little verse as a way of introduction this today. Exodus 15:23, and this morning I want to do something just a little bit different than what I would normally do in my preaching.

Normally what I would do is take a passage or portion of scripture and work our way down through it. But this morning I want us to do more of what would be considered a thematic study. And I want to share with you some "Lessons Learned From Four Familiar Trees" that I believe will be a real encouragement and help to you today.

Look there in Exodus chapter 15, verse 23. "Now when they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore the name of it was called Marah.24 And the people complained against Moses, saying, "What shall we drink?"25 So he cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a tree. . ."

". . .LORD showed him a tree. . ."

One of the things that I learned way back at the beginning of my ministry is that trees have a very special place in the Bible. And just like in many of our lives, the people of the Bible often learned some tremendous life lessons, and even more so - the Lord's lessons, somewhere around some tree.

• You could ask Moses about some of the lessons he'd learned from the Lord and he'd probably take you back and tell you about this tree.
• You could ask Elijah about some of the lessons he'd learned from the Lord and he'd prbably tell you about the time that the Lord ministered to him while he was underneath a Juniper tree.
• David, commenting about a consistent, conscientious, commited Christian in Psalm 1 says that "He shall be like a tree Planted by the rivers of water, That brings forth its fruit in its season. . ."
