• Matt. 25:31-40 (NIV)
• The defining characteristic of a Christian is compassion
"'For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited Me in, I needed clothes and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you came to visit Me.'" Vs. 35-36 (NIV)
• Compassion: When I sacrifice to help those who can't do anything for me in return.
"Recent Christian growth is caused by their moral character, even if pretended, and by their benevolence to strangers. While the pagan priests neglect the poor, the hated Galileans devote themselves to works of charity. The impious Galileans support not only their poor, but ours as well." Julian the Apostate 360 AD
A PRAYER FOR COMPASSION
1. DISTURB MY SOUL
"They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help You?' "He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me.' "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life." Matt. 25:44-46 (NIV)
----
I have here two sheep and a goat, and it wasn't very problematic in Christ's day to tell the sheep from the goats. In fact if you were a shepherd in Christ's day, you would normally have sheep and goats together in your flock, and then when it was time to sheer the sheep, then you would separate the sheep from the goats. And you could always tell the difference because of some distinguishing marks that would make the sheep stand out from the goats. Do you know which one is the goat? There are two sheep. No, it's not color. It's basically a couple of things. The hair, I mean the coat of a sheep is wool, and the coat of a goat is hair. Another thing is sheep's' tails go down and a goat's tail goes up. That's another way you can tell. And by the way, this is the goat ... this little guy with the horns, and this is the mother sheep, and that's the little baby daughter. So isn't that sweet? Probably the most distinguishing mark though that makes a sheep stand out from goats is sheep are great followers. They depend totally upon the shepherd while goats, on the other hand, they kind of have a mind of their own. They kind of go their own way. And Jesus so often ... why are you guys so still? It's amazing. I'm spellbound. I think they just noticed you after all these services. I have to say this ... that sheep aren't the smartest animals, and goats do their own thing whenever they choose, and they go their own way, that's for sure. So, why don't we try not to step in it, and let's move along. Okay? Let's go. This goat is just strangling this sheep here.
