Series: WWF: War, Worry and Fear

This sermon includes the sermon outline and the full sermon transcript. Below you will see a preview of the outline and a portion of the full sermon.
1. WHAT IS THE ROOT CAUSE OF WAR?
"Where do these wars and battles between yourselves first start? Isn't it precisely in the desires fighting inside your own selves? You want something and you haven't got it; so you are prepared to kill. You have an ambition that you cannot satisfy; so you fight to get your way by force." James 4:1-2 (JB)
2. IS WAR EVER JUST?
"...a time for war and a time for peace." Eccl. 3:8 (NIV)
"When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers." Prov. 21:15 (NIV)
"(Government) is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer." Rom. 13:4 (NIV)
"Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it."
Ps. 34:14 (NIV)
3. WILL THERE EVER BE LASTING PEACE IN THE WORLD?
"He will settle disputes among great nations. They will hammer their swords into plows and their spears into pruning knives. Nations will never again go to war, never prepare for battle again." Isaiah 2:4 (GN)

God Bless America. I'm starting a new series today that I am calling WWF: War, Worry and Fear. In this series we are going to be wrestling with some tough issues in a world of uncertainty. We've all been going to the television this last week as the war to liberate Iraq has begun. We've been mesmerized because for the first time we've seen war in real time. So, in the first installment of this series we are going to wrestle with the tough issue of war. A lot of churches and a lot of pastors avoid these kind of tough issues, but I think it's so important that we talk about them. I'm no politician. I'm a pastor. So we are going to look at what the Bible has to say about war. We are going to look, most importantly, about what the Bible has to say about what you and I are to do during times of war. We are going to wrestle with four tough questions about war that the Bible clearly answers. So, let's get right into it. You have an outline in your program. All your verses are listed there.
1. WHAT IS THE ROOT CAUSE OF WAR?
First, WHAT IS THE ROOT CAUSE OF WAR? James 4:1-2 tells us. "Where do these wars and battles between yourselves first start? Isn't it precisely in the desires fighting inside your own selves? You want something and you haven't got it; so you are prepared to kill. You have an ambition that you cannot satisfy; so you fight to get your way by force." The Bible says when you boil it all down, the real issue that causes most wars is pride and selfishness. There is a clear example of that here, a clear example of selfishness.
