If you would take out the outlines from your program, we're concluding the series today that we've been in for the last several weeks that I'm calling Under the Sea as we've been looking at how to go deeper in Christ by growing in our love for each other. And we said the Bible has a word for this new depth in relationships. It's the word fellowship. That's a really misunderstood word, because usually when we think of fellowship, we think of a casual conversation or maybe eating out with friends. But the Bible says the word fellowship goes much deeper than that. It's really loving at the deepest level, and that's what we're talking about in this series.
Now when I got my diving certificate recently, I quickly learned that to go the best dive spots you really need a boat to take you there. So today we're going to talk about the dive boat that takes you to new depths in your relationships and in your relationship with Christ, and that dive boat is the church.
So let's look at our first verse. It's Ephesians 1:5. It says, "His unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ...." Now circle the word family. The entire Bible, all of history, is the story of God building a family. That's what He's doing, and it's a forever family, because you were made to last forever, and you were made to belong in God's family. So fellowship is really loving and being loved in God's family at the deepest level, and it's one of God's purposes for your life because you were never meant to be alone. You were made for relationships, and you were made to belong in God's family.
Look at the next verse, 1 Timothy 3:14. Paul says, "...I am writing...so you will know how to live in the family of God. That family is the church...." Circle the word family in that verse, and circle the word church and draw a line to connect the two because the church is a family. It's not a building. It's not an organization.
