Have you ever really thought about what the flight attendant is saying about the Oxygen Mask just before takeoff? If you are traveling with someone who needs assistance, please place the oxygen mask on yourself first and then you can help the person seated next to you. Now, it's obvious because you would be passed out and you couldn't help anyone unless you put your oxygen mask on first. But there is a powerful, spiritual truth in those words. And that is if I'm going to make a difference in the lives of others and be a healing agent in the world I have to first take time to focus on myself to make sure I'm healthy. Healthy emotionally, healthy physically, healthy spiritually. Jesus said this in the last part of the great commandment. It's our first verse today. So take a look at it with me in Matthew 22. "Jesus replied, 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. The second most important is similar: 'Love your neighbor as much as you love yourself.' " Now, most believers understand that we are to love God first, that we are to love our neighbor, but we miss the last part of that passage. We are to love our neighbor as much as we love ourselves. Jesus was saying before you can really love someone else, before you can really make a difference in someone else's life, you have to first learn to love yourself. I know that sounds selfish, but it's just the opposite of selfishness. In fact, it's essential. You have to put the oxygen mask on yourself first or you can't help anyone else. You have to first take time to get healthy so you can be a healing agent in the world. In fact, I would say until you learn how to love yourself, you can never really learn to love and care for others the way God wants you to. We are starting a new series today that I am calling Time Squared. It's all about how to multiply your time to change your life. Of course we all have the same amount of time in a day. There is nothing you can do to increase the length of a day to 25 hours or 30 hours or 40 hours like we would like. We are all stuck with 24 hours. So, really this is not about multiplying your time. It's more about multiplying your energy to be more effective with the time God has given you.
