Matthew 6:9-15
''This, then, is how you should pray: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.' For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.''
Matt. 6:9-15 (NIV)
1. SEE BENEATH THE SURFACE OF UNFORGIVENESS
Why Should I Forgive?
Christ commands it
''... forgive as the Lord forgave you.'' Col. 3:13 (NIV)
My survival demands it
My future requires it
''For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.''
Matt. 6:14-15 (NIV)
What Forgiveness Is Not:
Forgiveness is not about performance
Forgiveness is not about pretending
Forgiveness is not about projecting
2. RELEASE THE PRESSURE OF BITTERNESS
''Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and
do not give the devil a foothold.'' Eph. 4:26-27 (NIV)
Breathe out bitterness
''Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, 'I will confess my transgressions to the Lord' -- and you forgave the guilt of my sin.'' Ps. 32:5 (NIV)
Breathe in forgiveness
''... do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.'' Luke 6:27-28 (NIV)
3. EXPERIENCE THE DEPTHS OF CHRIST'S FORGIVENESS
''Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.'' Ps. 32:1 (KJV)
''The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him. John said, 'Look, the Lamb of God. He takes away the sins of the world!''
John 1:29 (ICB)
