This week we saw first hand the devastation of another unexpected, natural disaster as Hurricane Charlie took an unexpected turn right toward the end at the last minute and just pounded the Florida coast. But really folks, the worst disasters happen in relationships. Even though the devastation is not always as easy to see on the surface, the landscape today is littered with the debris of broken relationships. Everything from marriage meltdowns and family fractures to relationship rips. Why are so many relationships falling apart today? I think it's because they are unprepared for the inevitable storms and stresses that naturally occur in life. The seismic wave of stress will come into every life and rock every relationship. That stress will either bring you closer together or it will tear you apart. It all depends on how you prepare for it and respond to it. We don't always react and respond correctly to stressful situations, do we? I heard recently a true story of an 80 year old woman who walked out to her car in the mall parking lot. When she got there she saw two men in her car trying to steal it. She had recently gotten a license to carry a concealed hand gun through taking a course so she pulled the gun out of her purse and she said, "I've got a gun. Get out of my car. I know how to use it." Well the men jumped out of the car and ran off frantically. She was visibly shaken up by the whole ordeal, but somehow she pulled herself together and got in the car, but interestingly enough her keys just wouldn't fit in the ignition. About that time mall security pulled up and she told them the whole story so they took her to the police station and she told the detective the story of how two guys had tried to steal her car and she had had to stop them. The detective just burst into laughter. She said, "What's wrong?" He said, "Madam, you've got to understand. There are two guys next door that are still in shook and they just filed a report about a gun wielding grandma who tried to car jack their car." We don't always respond and act correctly to stressful situations. That's why I'm starting a new series today about how to stress proof your life from the inevitable storms that hit every life. Today it's earthquake as we are looking at how to build the foundations for life and love. Scientists have tried, but they've never been able to predict when an earthquake is going to happen.
