----

We're in a series that I'm calling Motocross, as we're learning how the power of the cross can motor us through the obstacle course of life and we're talking tonight about a subject that I'm really passionate about, and that's God's power to lead. I can sum up leadership in two words: Influence and innovation. Leadership is first and foremost influence. That makes all of us leaders because we all have a sphere of influence. We all influence some people around us. Every action you take has the capacity to influence people around you for good or bad. Folks, leadership has nothing to do with job title. It has nothing to do with money. It has nothing to do with status, but it has everything to do with influence. There is an old Chinese proverb that says he who thinketh he leadeth but hath no one following is merely taking a walk. I don't care what your job title is, if you want to find out if you're a good leader or not, then you have to lookbehind you to see if anyone is following you. If you want to find out if you're an effective leader, then look behind you to see if you have any followers. Leadership first and foremost is influence.

And then leadership is innovation. Somebody said that everyone is born a brilliant original but most people die faded copies. You know, God created you as a brilliant original with a unique, original and innovative purpose for your life. God created you for an innovative purpose, a unique purpose that He didn't create anyone else for; but too many times we try to be like everyone else. But a real leader has to go off-road and blaze new trails for others to follow. A real leader has to dare to be different. Most people follow the crowd, while a leader follows their convictions. Most people ask what's popular, while a leader asks what's God's purpose? Most people say, well, that's never been done before, so I can't do it. While a leader says, that's never been done before, I'll be the first. You know, we're real fortunate because we have with us this weekend someone who is an influencer and an innovator in his sport, that's Motocross Freestyle jumping. In fact, he won last summer's ESPN X games in Motocross Freestyle jumping. He's a gold medalist and he's going to be interviewed right now by our student pastor Chris Ryan. So, I want you to give a warm Fellowship of The Woodlands welcome to X game gold medalist Chuck Carruthers.
