Well, today dads, it's our day. It's Father's Day, but have you noticed there is something a little different about Father's Day then Mother's Day? Mother's Day always gets top billing. Everyone always remembers Mother's Day. Father's Day, on the other hand, I had to call a family conference last night to be honest, folks, and I said "kids do you know what tomorrow is?" They said, "what, what is tomorrow? What's the big deal?" I said, "It's Father's Day." "Oh yeah, dad, we knew about that." That was the response I got. I had told you on Mother's Day that there was more long distance phone calls on Mother's Day then on any other day of the year by far. But on Father's Day, well there are more collect calls on Father's Day then any other day. Now, why is that? I don't get that. That's just not right. Maybe it's because of stories like this. It's a true story that appeared in the Boston Glove in 1992. A Massachusetts man had his two children with him and he was putting them in the car. Now, give him credit. He did remember to strap in his 20-month-old daughter in the back seat, but trying to remember all these childcare details can really stretch a man's mind. It's pretty difficult. So, he forgot that he had placed the car seat on top of the car with his three-month-old son in the car seat and he accelerated out on to Interstate 290 and he heard some rattling on top of his car. Now, isn't that classic guy behavior? He doesn't notice that he has on 50% of his children in the car with him, but he does notice his car is making a funny noise. Going 50 mph down the freeway the car seat flies off with the little boy in it, lands on Interstate 290 and somehow miraculously skids safely to a stop. The boy was unharmed. So the story has a happy ending. That is if you are not the man who was driving that car. Can you imagine this guy trying to explain to his wife when he got home what happened? I can't even imagine. Well, honey, it was no big deal. He was just on top of the car for two miles. It was just not that big of a deal. I can't even imagine trying to explain that and what makes matters worse, this incident happened on Mother's Day. Not a good thing. Sometimes we guys aren't dialed in like we ought to be. Now, on Mother's Day in churches the messages are always sympathetic to moms. Have you noticed that? Where the pastor is usually encouraging moms and saying you are overworked, you do so much. Moms don't be so hard on yourself.
