… this phenomenon called "American Idol." You've all seen the show where people from all walks of life put their singing talents on display in hopes of becoming the next pop music star. When I watch this show I have to say everybody thinks they are a singer. Some of the people that try out are just awful. Just watch this clip from one of the American Idol shows from a few weeks ago as this guy tries out and he's just terrible and he thinks he's great, but he's awful. Just watch …

That was pathetic. That was terrible. We are going to have our own version of American Idol here at Fellowship of The Woodlands. We are going to have a lot of fun because we are going to give you the opportunity for a dream job. That is the job of doing the welcome at our weekend services. In fact, this Wednesday night we are having tryouts and you'll see in your program there is a little insert. If you would like to try out for the dream job of doing the actual welcome at the weekend services in a couple of weeks then come this Wednesday night at 7:00. I think the date down there is wrong, it's March 24th, this Wednesday at 7:00. We'll have our panel of judges here. Some of the pastors who normally do the welcome, you'll come up on state. We'll have a sample welcome on our teleprompters and you'll try out. Next weekend we are going to have some video highlights of the tryouts along with those who are the finalists that were chosen by our judges to go on in the competition and you the congregation will actually vote for the winner. Then, the next week, two weeks from today, the winner will do the welcome in the weekend services. This is your big chance at the dream job to be on stage. We thought about having tryouts to preach the message, but that scared me way too much so we didn't do that. We are going to have a little bit of fun in this series, but we are going to talk about one of the most serious subjects in all the Bible. Idols. I'm starting this new series called American Idols: The Substitutes that Steal Our Happiness. We no longer have idols of wood and stone and gold and silver and bronze like they did in the ancient world, but we still have our idols. An idol is anything we substitute for God in our lives. Write that there in your notes. An idol is anything I substitute for God in my life. Whenever I put anything ahead of God as first place in my life it becomes an idol.
