HOW TO BECOME A MAJOR LEAGUE MAN
1. HE NEEDS A COACH
----
On Friday I was speaking at a seminar for pastors in California, but my mind was definitely elsewhere. One of the coaches on my son's little league baseball team got tickets for all the kids to go to the game on Friday night and I am a big Astros fan. I love the Astros. Somehow he got tickets for everyone behind home plate in the diamond seats for every kid on the team plus one parent. Since I was out of town, my wife who maybe doesn't know a whole lot about the Astros, got to go with Steven down to the game. I kept thinking, I wish I was home. When I got on the plane with Pastor Stan who was with me at the time, I turned to him and said, "Stan, I'm going to call Chris on her cell phone and just see how the game is going." So I called on the cell phone and Chris said, "Kerry, you won't believe it. It's great. Steven is having the time of his life. We are sitting right behind home plate about three rows up, we just ate in the restaurant behind home plate and it's just really neat. By the way, some of the Astros signed a jersey for each of the kids." I said, "Some of the Astros? What Astros would that be?" She said, "Oh, it's just guys like Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio and other guys like that. No big deal." I'm going, "Man, I can't believe it. I could be there with my son, Steven, just experiencing this moment with him. I would just love to see the look on his face and to be there." While I am saying this, Pastor Stan is next to me on the plane singing Cats in the Cradle trying to really encourage me. I said, "Thanks a lot, Stan." I guess Chris could detect a little bit of disappointment in my voice so then she started playing it down a little bit like well, Kerry, it's not that big of a deal. There are other games, you know. Then she said, "I've got to go, Kerry, Steven is handing George Bush his baseball and he's signing it for him right now." She hung up the phone. I'm going, George, George, what was that? I looked over at Stan and I said, "I could be there at the Astros game right behind home plate with my son Steven watching him have the time of his life sitting by former President Bush, but I am here with you.
