II Timothy 2:8-13

In the high desert of Afghanistan at the remote Bagram Air Base, Sergeant Richard Grimm opened a Starbucks coffee shop in 2004.
It was housed in an old steel shipping container with a plywood front and hand-senciled letters letting announcing to the troops and others who work there "Starbucks is Open."

Customers cramed into an unheated space the size of a Humvee.
A homemade picnic table sits where most Starbucks patrons would expect to see plush velvet chairs. The store is open for only two hours in the morning and another at night.

The soldier's rouge outpost was south of the snow-capped Kush mountains. The Starbucks coffee was the brainchild of Scott Matthews. He said he got the idea as his unit prepared to deploy and realized that there would be no decent cappuccinos and maybe no decent coffee at all, in that high desert country.

His sister, who worked at a Starbucks, showed him how to buy coffee machines on the Internet. The soldiers in his unit pooled their money together to buy the machines which cost about $1,000.
Because all the coffee has been donated they don't charge the customers, but they take donations from the troops.

Inside the shop, two soldiers who used to work at Starbucks, volunteer their time to operate the espresso machines. Asked
why they will work this job for no pay, they said, "Just for the morale of the soldiers."

As Matthews spoke, a line of soldiers formed behind him, all looking for a cup of coffee to ward off the chill of the gray Afghan morning. Between the morning and night shifts Matthews and another soldier maintain Black Hawk helicopters. But it is evident
that their real passion was troop morale, served up in many flavors.

Encouragement can come in many forms, but for the believer it
is not something temporary, but someone eternal our Savior.
