Set Apart - Part 2 (7 of 26)
Series: Romans
Zach Terry
Romans 6:14-23
INTRODUCTION: Having already seen our terrible fall into SIN in chapters 1-3, we noticed what God has done to provide SALVATION in from the end of 3-5. Last week we began studying this third major section of Paul's letter to the Christian's who gathered in Rome - as Paul began to show how the Doctrine of Justification by Grace through faith progressively SANCTIFIES the heart of the one who believes.
Sanctification - it means to be set apart for a particular purpose or reason.
EXAMPLE: when we begin to lay aside money for a vacation this summer, we are sanctifying that money. It is not to be used for just any old reason - it is set apart for a particular purpose. On Saturday night we set apart the clothes we want our kids to wear to church. So those clothes are sanctified.
Well when you were called to salvation, God set you apart for His Glory. That process of setting you apart is called, ''Sanctification''.
Sanctification is the present tense of salvation.
You see, the Bible speaks of salvation in three tenses:
1. Past Tense, Justification
Justification is what Paul was talking about in 2 Timothy 1:8-9 (NASB95) 8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me His prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God, 9 who has saved us and called us with a holy calling...
- Justification is the Judicial declaration that you are righteous because of Christ.
- Justification is all of God and none of man.
Martin Luther was right when he said - the only contribution we make to our justification is the sin God so graciously forgives.
Justification happens instantly and completely.
- When you are saved, you are as Justified as any Christian in all of History. Paul, Billy Graham.
- When you are saved, you are as Justified as you will ever be. (In heaven you will be no more Justified than you are right now.
