Alright let's read this passage of scripture together in James Chapter 5 and tonight we are thinking on the subject, "The Bible and Bodily Healing". This is only one instance of the scripture in instruction about physical bodily healing.
There are many, many others and it would take a whole series of sermons and
several nights to really explore the theology of healing in the Bible. I imagine that the Lord would lead us sometime in the future to do that kind of a study and so you will know tonight that we can't cover all the aspects of this subject.
Verse 10 says, "TAKE, MY BRETHREN, THE PROPHETS, WHO HAVE SPOKEN IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, FOR AN EXAMPLE OF SUFFERING AFFLICTION, AND OF PATIENCE. BEHOLD, WE COUNT THEM HAPPY WHICH ENDURE. YE HAVE HEARD OF THE PATIENCE OF JOB, AND HAVE SEEN THE END OF THE LORD; THAT THE LORD IS VERY PITIFUL, AND OF TENDER MERCY.
BUT ABOVE ALL THINGS, MY BRETHREN, SWEAR NOT, NEITHER BY HEAVEN, NEITHER BY THE EARTH, NEITHER BY ANY OTHER OATH: BUT LET YOUR YEA BE YEA; AND YOUR NAY, NAY; LEST YE FALL INTO CONDEMNATION. IS ANY AMONG YOU AFFLICTED? LET HIM PRAY. IS ANY MERRY? LET HIM SING PSALMS.
IS ANY SICK AMONG YOU? LET HIM CALL FOR THE ELDERS OF THE CHURCH; AND LET THEM PRAY OVER HIM, ANOINTING HIM WITH OIL IN THE NAME OF THE LORD: AND THE PRAYER OF FAITH SHALL SAVE THE SICK, AND THE LORD SHALL RAISE HIM UP; AND IF HE HAVE COMMITTED SINS, THEY SHALL BE FORGIVEN HIM."
Now from Genesis to Revelation the Bible teaches that God is a God of healing. The healing ministry of the prophets is something you cannot overlook in the Old Testament as you read the lives of Elijah and Elisha and you see the ministry that God gave to them, the touch of healing, the miracle of healing.
And then of course when you look at the life of Jesus Christ you see so many, ...
