Some Things I Am Thankful For

I am grateful to be here tonight in this joint Thanksgiving service. I appreciate Bill and Andy for being willing to make this service a reality.
We have as many Presbyterians here tonight as God willed; a sprinkling of Methodists, and one more Baptist than what we set as a goal.
I heard about two Baptists who shipwrecked and were stranded on an island. They set a goal to have three in Sunday school the next Sunday.
I heard about another Baptist who was shipwrecked on an island and stayed there alone for many years. When he was finally rescued, the rescuers noticed three huts and asked about them. The Baptist said, one is where I live, one is where I go to church, and the other one is where I used to go to church.
Isn't it wonderful that we are not here tonight to discuss our differences but to celebrate our similarities?
The first Thanksgiving in America was celebrated by Pilgrims in 1621. The celebration came as a recommendation so the Pilgrims could focus on the good things and not the bad things. President Lincoln declared a National Day of Thanksgiving in 1863.
But long before Thanksgiving was a day, it was given to us by God as a responsibility and an exercise of obedience.
Thanksgiving is an amazing medicine. When we are thankful our worries cease, complaining disappears, and peace comes into our hearts.
The children of Israel had special days of thanksgiving when they would come before the Lord and express their gratitude and appreciation of Him.
The Jewish hymnbook was the psalms. "We are to enter his courts with praise and with thanksgiving."
Thanksgiving is scattered throughout the NT. It is connected with both prayer and praise.
-Paul said, "I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, always in every request of mine with thanksgiving."
-The writer of Hebrews said in 3:15, "Let us therefore offer unto him our sacrifice to God ...
