Part 1: Father Forgive Them
Series: Seven Last Words
Stuart Briscoe
Luke 23:26-43
Scripture records seven occasions on which Jesus spoke at the point of His greatest extremity, as He hung naked on the cross. His statements open a unique window into His heart and mind and as such demand our reverent attention. Today we will reflect on His remarkable prayer: "Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing."
I. His Focus on the Father.
A. He might have focused on the gross injustice of the situation.
1. Judas' treachery.
2. Pilate's perfidy.
3. Roman cruelty.
4. The establishment's hostility.
5. The disciples' timidity.
B. He could have focused on His considerable suffering.
1. He had done this in the Garden…
2. …and the issue had been settled with His Father. Luke 22:42
C. He chose to focus on the Father.
1. "Father save me from this hour? No…" John 12:27
2. "…Father glorify you name." John 12:28
