Matthew 5:1-16

When Jesus took His disciples on a retreat into the hills near Galilee, He told them about the blessings, privileges, and responsibilities of being members of the "kingdom of heaven." What He said is very important to modern day disciples including:

I. Appreciating Your Calling: "You Are the Light of the World."

A. A disciple's identity: "you are…"
1. The eight ideal characteristics of kingdom people. vv. 3 10

2. The eight privileges of kingdom-dwellers.

B. The disciple's calling.
1. "Salt of the earth" (v. 13): a corrective influence, arresting corruption.

2. "Light of the world" (v. 14): a positive influence, giving direction.

3. "Good deeds" that are clearly visible. v. 16

C. The disciple's uniqueness.
1. Jesus: "While I am in the world, I am the light of the world." John 9:5

2. Disciples: "You are the light of the world."

II. Eliminating Your Negatives: "Don't Put It Under a Bowl."

A. Beware of "salt that loses its saltiness." v. 13
1. Profession that loses its pungency.

Part 2: The Light that Shines

Modern day disciples, who take seriously their calling to be "the light of the world," need answers to the questions: "How precisely is this to be done?" and "What will be the result?" Some factors they should consider are:

I. Producing Kingdom Living.

A. Being conscious of the call to shine "before men." v. 16
1. Having been blessed.

2. Having the desire to be a blessing.

B. Being concerned about the impact of lifestyle.
1. The calm assurance of kingdom membership. vv. 3, 10

2. The deep peace of being comforted. v. 4

3. The steady confidence of future hope. v. 5

4. The quiet satisfaction of righteousness. v. 6

5. The rich insight of genuine spirituality. v. 8

C. Being conscientious in the use of time, energy, and resources-"good deeds."
1. Good deeds of mercy. v. 7

2. Good deeds of peacemaking. v. 9
