A. Under theocratic rule, Israel had acknowledged Jahve as King.¬
B. But they wanted a king like the neighboring cities and states.
C. God warned them about the downside of monarchies. 1 Samuel 8
D. He reluctantly gave them a king, but imposed strict limitations. Deuteronomy 17:14f
E. The king was responsible for the welfare of God's people.
F. Saul, the first king, was deposed; David, a man after God's own heart, took over.
II. The Call of David. 1 Samuel 16:1 13
A. God dismissed Saul for his arrogance and disobedience. 1 Samuel 15
B. In contrast, David was a humble shepherd who knew the Shepherd. Psalm 23
