Haggai 2:10-19
Nice buildings are no guarantee of worshipping communities. Holy temples do not create holy people. So while the important work of rebuilding the temple progressed, the Lord instructed Haggai to ask the priests to instruct the people on issues of practical, holy living.
I. Instruction by the Priests. v. 11
A. The importance of the Covenant of Israel. Exodus 19:4 6
1. Treasured possession.
2. Kingdom of priests.
3. Holy Nation.
B. The significance of the Law (Torah) for Israel.
1. Being a holy people required unique, distinctive living.
2. The Law outlined the details of distinctiveness. See Exodus 20:1 17
C. The role of the priests in Israel. See Leviticus 10:1 11
1. Distinguishing between holy and profane, clean and unclean.
2. Teaching people the laws that outlined the differences.

Haggai 2:20-23
Zerubbabel, the leader of the reconstruction project was evidently in need of assurance that he was on the right track. He got this from Haggai-and more. Zechariah joined in as well.
I. A Reassuring Message Regarding the Immediate Future. Zechariah 4:1 14
A. The vision of the lampstand. vv. 1 5, 11 14
1. The significance of the lampstand-the Temple, Jerusalem.
2. The brilliance of its shining-7 lamps or 49?
3. The means of its shining-two olive trees.
4. The identity of the olive trees-Joshua the priest, Zerubbabel the governor.
5. The secret of its supply-the golden oil. v. 12
B. The oracles of the Lord. vv. 6 10
1. The Lord's work is done "not by might, nor by power" but by the Spirit.
2. When the Lord works, mighty mountains are removed.
3. The Lord uses people who are in touch with His Spirit.
4. The Lord completes what He starts-a cause for great rejoicing.
5. Those who despise small beginnings will be silenced.
