Luke 7:36-50

Jesus insisted on looking positively and graciously on social outcasts much to the dismay of the social elite. It was not that He had favorites. He simply found that the underprivileged and the undesirables were often more receptive to His message than the self-sufficient.

I. What Jesus Did that Upset People.

A. The second thoughts of John.
1. John preached judgment and repentance; Jesus modeled grace.
a. John-"Flee from the coming wrath." 3:7

b. Jesus-This is "the year of the Lord's favor." 4:19

2. John lived an austere lifestyle; Jesus went to parties.
a. "John's disciples often fast and pray." 5:33

b. Jesus went out to dinner. 7:36, 11:37, 14:1

3. John exposed the ills of society; Jesus announced the Kingdom.
a. "You brood of vipers." 3:7

b. "The good news is preached to the poor." 7:22

Part 6: Jesus Communed with the Father

The secret of the spectacular outward life of Jesus was the intimate inward communion He enjoyed with the Father. One evidence of this was that "He often withdrew to lonely places and prayed." (Luke 5:16) He taught His disciples to develop a similar life of intimacy.

I. What Did Jesus Do?

A. He claimed a unique relationship with God whom He called "Father."
1. Only the Father knew who Jesus really was. 10:22

2. Only Jesus knew who the Father really is! 10:22

3. Only those know the Father who receive the Son and His revelation.

4. Only Jesus understood the Father's "good pleasure." 10:21

5. Only because Jesus knew "the Lord of heaven and earth" could He be "full of joy through the Holy Spirit" when He had "no place to lay His head." 9:58

B. He nurtured this unique relationship by drawing on the Father's resources.
1. He knew-"all things have been committed to Me by My Father." 10:22

2. He trusted-"Father into your hands I commit My spirit." 23:46
