Part 2: The Scriptures Are About Facts, Not Fantasy
Series: Six Things We Must Never Forget!
Stuart Briscoe
2 Peter 1:12-21
In Peter's day, the Old Testament Scriptures and the apostles' teachings were being twisted, fundamental truths ridiculed, and biblical morality repudiated. So he reminded the people of the significance of God's Word. We need the reminder, too, for we live in similar days.
I. The Scriptures-A Body of Truth to Be Embraced. vv. 12 15
A. The meaning of biblical truth.
1. Validity-normative, genuine, proper. Ephesians 4:21; Galatians 2:14
2. Reliability-faithfulness, honesty, sincerity. Romans 3:4; 2 Corinthians 7:14
3. Reality-right, correct. Romans 1:18, 25; 2:2
4. Veracity-accuracy. Matthew 22:16
B. The uniqueness of biblical truth.
1. Philosophical "truth" without knowledge of God only approximates.
2. Scientific "truth" limited to study of creation not Creator.
3. Biblical "truth" reveals God in Christ through the work of the Spirit.
C. The application of biblical truth.
1. Truth is to be taught, learned, and believed. 1 John 2:21; Acts 2:42
