I. An Expose of Godless Activity. vv. 1 3
A. In Old Testament times there were "false prophets."
B. Throughout time there will be "false teachers."
1. They will introduce "destructive heresies."
2. They will deny "the Sovereign Lord who bought them."
3. They will bring "swift destruction on themselves."
4. They will encourage many "to follow their shameful ways."
5. They will "bring the way of truth into disrepute."
6. They will "exploit" people with "stories they have made up."
7. Their condemnation is "hanging over them," their "destruction" is sure.
II. An Explanation of God's Actions. vv. 4 9
A. His actions against the rebellious angels.
1. He permitted them to see His glory.
2. He granted them the ability to choose, they chose to sin.

Part 4: Liberty Has Its Limits

Human history is all about oppression and liberation, tyranny and emancipation. It is also about the abuse of freedom and confusion about liberty. Peter addressed the issue, talking about being "slaves of depravity" and "a man is a slave to what¬ever has mastered him."
I. The "Freedom" that in Reality Is Bondage.
A. The promise of freedom that is in error because it assumes:
1. There is no final judgment.
2. There is no ultimate authority.
3. There is no final accounting.
4. We're free to pursue our own desires.
B. The promise of freedom that is empty because:
1. It proffers a freedom that it cannot deliver.
a. "Springs without water." v. 17
b. "Mists driven by a storm."
2. It is presented by those who do not experience freedom. v. 19
a. They are bold and arrogant. v. 10
b. They blaspheme in matters they do not understand. v. 12
