Relationships in Joseph's family were sadly in need of repair. On the surface it appears that he was making matters worse, but he was forcing the brothers to face up to the seriousness of the problem. Deep-rooted relational problems sel¬dom yield to superficial solutions.
I. Relationships Must Be Evaluated Realistically.
A. In light of what they are designed to provide.
1. Loving protection from need, danger, and evil.
2. Loving inspection to identify factors that would hinder, mar, or destroy.
3. Loving correction designed to assist, develop, and mature.
B. In light of what can go wrong.
1. Deficient actions-failure to provide.
2. Destructive attitudes-resentment, anger, intrusiveness, censoriousness.
C. In light of what they are doing to all involved.
II. Responsibility Must Be Accepted Individually.
A. Avoid the tactic of generalization; Judah steps forward personally.
B. Avoid the tactic of evasion; Judah rejects opportunity to abandon Benjamin.

Part 8: How to Grasp a Second Chance

When Joseph finally revealed his true identity to his brothers they were overwhelmed. His offer of forgiveness and a second chance took them totally by surprise. We can learn much from his example and their reactions.
I. Joseph's Surprising Offer of a Second Chance.
A. A surprising revelation.
1. Joseph was no longer what he used to be.
2. He was not what the brothers hoped he was.
3. They were not in the position they assumed they were.
B. A surprising explanation.
1. An explanation of human responsibility-"You sold me into Egypt."
a. Human beings are capable of choice.
b. Choices can be right or wrong.
c. Right choices bring blessing; wrong choices cause pain.
d. Those who make wrong choices experience guilt and shame.
2. An explanation of divine sovereignty-"God sent me ahead of you…"
a. God is ultimately in control.
