Part 3: The Foolish Heart
Series: Secrets of the Heart
Stuart Briscoe
Psalm 14
Heart attitudes that attempt to resist or negate God are at the root of behavioral problems that beset human existence. God searches the hearts of His creatures and calls these attitudes "folly." But there is salvation for such people, and the believer's concern is to see the good news spreading to those most in need of it.
I. The Human Problem. v. 1
A. The person who says, "There is no God."
1. This is an article of faith based on unprovable assumptions.
2. This robs him of his dignity-no intelligent reason for existence.
3. This denies him ultimate purpose-no evaluation of performance.
B. The person who says in his heart "There is no God."
1. This is a rejection of God's relevance not a denial of His existence.
2. This is "Folly"…
3. Because it rejects "Wisdom" i.e., "the fear of God." Proverbs 9:10
C. The problems of those who resist or deny God.
1. Nothing to protect them from moral corruption-"corrupt."
2. Nothing to define immoral behavior-"vile deeds."

Stuart Briscoe
Psalm 25
The Psalmist openly admits that in his heart he is experiencing "intense inner turmoil." He is feeling lonely, pressured and concerned. So he turns his thoughts to the Lord, refreshing his mind and laying his concerns out in prayer.
I. The Psalmist Reaffirms His Faith. vv. 1-7
A. He believes the Lord is worthy of trust. vv. 1-3
1. He would not embarrass me.
2. He will embarrass the guilty.
B. He believes the Lord knows what is best. vv. 4-5
1. He shows the way to those who will follow.
2. He guides into truth those who will learn.
3. He delivers from trouble those who will trust.
C. He believes the Lord is merciful. vv. 6-7
1. He mercifully proved Himself in the past.
2. He mercifully forgives the repentant.
