They say that man is mighty,
He governs land and sea.
He wields a mighty scepter,
On lower powers than he.

But mightier power and stronger,
Man from his throne has hurled,
For the hand that rocks the cradle
Is the hand that rules the world.

In response to a letter-writing campaign, organized by Anna Jarvis, designed to give special attention to mothers; on May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the 2nd Sunday of May National Mothers' Day as a "public expression of...love and reverence for the mothers of our country." Ever since that day, we are told that more cards and telephone calls are made on Mother's Day than any other holiday.

Howard Johnson, using the word "Mother," gave the following acronym:

"M" is for the million things she gave me,
"O" means only that she's growing old,
"T" is for the tears she shed to save me,
"H" is for her heart of purest gold;
"E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
"R" means right, and right she'll always be,
Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER,"
A word that means the world to me.

A young, single mother with 3 children was given a play pen by one of her neighbors. A few days later, she wrote a note to the benevolent family:
"Many thanks for the play pen. It is being used every day from 2 to 3 pm. I get in it to read and the children can't get near me"
