PREVIEWS:

Part 1: Renewed Focus
Series: Spiritual Renewal
Stuart Briscoe
Colossians 3:1-4

It is generally agreed that the western world is in need of spiritual revival. Historically, cultures have been revived when the church has been renewed. But the church is renewed one believer at a time. So let us pursue personal renewal beginning with a renewed focus.

I. The Former Focus of "The Life You Once Lived."

A. Some focus on evil behavior stemming from enmity towards God. 1:21

B. Some focus on "hollow and deceptive philosophy." 2:8

C. Some focus on legalistic, ritualistic activities. 2:16

Part 2: Renewed Disciplines
Series: Spiritual Renewal
Stuart Briscoe
Colossians 3:5-8

The orientation of much modern spirituality is inward. That of Christian spiri¬tuality is upward and outward. Not that the inward is neglected, but it requires a focus on "things above" to motivate and empower us to discipline what we find within ourselves.

I. Clarifying, the Place of Spiritual Discipline.

A. Facing the reality of our "earthly nature." v. 5
1. The reality of behavior that is incompatible with our spiritual status.

2. The reasons for such behavior. (lit. "our members on the earth.")
a. Our body is the vehicle of our spiritual life on earth.

b. Our body's members are instruments of spiritual forces.

Part 3: Renewed Self-Image
Series: Spiritual Renewal
Stuart Briscoe
Colossians 3:9-11

Robert Burns, the Scottish poet, wrote, "Oh that God the gift would give us, to see ourselves as others see us." This can be helpful-and devastating! But what really matters is that we see ourselves from the divine perspective. This view yields a true self-image!

I. Self-Image that Understands a Revolution Has Taken Place.

A. Being clear that something actually happened in the past.
1. You heard, learned, and understood God's grace in all its truth. 1:6-7

2. You were rescued from dominion and brought into the kingdom. 1:13

3. You were reconciled in order to be presented, holy, to God. 1:22
