Ephesians 1:1-14

Some people see a world spinning hopelessly out of control, while others explore the universe looking for worlds for mankind to conquer. But both forget one thing: God has a plan-and we're part of it! The epistle to the Ephesians explains.

I. The Personal Dimensions of God's Plan. vv. 1-2

A. Paul: an apostle "by the will of God."

B. Ephesians: "saints" by the call of God.

C. Grace and peace through the Son of God.

II. The Spiritual Dimensions of God's Plan. vv. 3, 7 9

A. God the Father is "blessed" for He has "blessed" us with "blessings."

B. The "blessings" are "spiritual" and in "the heavenlies."
1. Blessings "in the heavenlies" are not earthy.

2. "Spiritual" blessings are related to the work of the Spirit.

3. It is "in Christ" that God the Father imparts spiritual blessing.
a. "In Him we have redemption through His blood." v. 7

Part 2: God's Plan for the Believer

Ephesians 1:15-23

Having blessed God for His blessings lavished on the Ephesians, Paul comments on their behavior and then launches into a prayer for their continued spiritual development, which gives us a clue to what God plans for believers.

I. Believers Should Behave in a Way that Is Noteworthy. vv. 15-16

A. Paul had heard about them…

B. …because people were talking about them…

C. …because their behavior was noteworthy.

D. They were demonstrating "faith in the Lord Jesus."

E. They were exhibiting "love for all the saints."

II. Believers Need to Deepen in Their Knowledge of God. v. 17

A. The place of prayer.

B. The work of grace-"the glorious Father may give you…"

C. The activity of the Spirit.
