Ephesians 5:1-21
There is a direct connection between the things people believe and the way they behave. Patterns of behavior are now known as "lifestyles." Christians have very specific beliefs that have a direct bearing on their behavior. The result is a Christian lifestyle.
I. The Beliefs that Determine Behavior.
A. Belief in God whom we seek to imitate. v. 1
B. Belief in Christ whom we have come to know. 4:20
C. Belief in the Spirit whom we long not to grieve. 4:30
II. The Behavior that Reflects the Beliefs.
A. A lifestyle that is based on the love of God. vv. 1-2
1. God's children should imitate their loving heavenly Father.
2. God's Son loved us and gave Himself for us-He is our model.
3. God's delight is in His loving children-their loving is "fra¬grant."
B. A lifestyle that is conscious of the wrath of God. vv. 3 7

Ephesians 5:21-33
I. The Context of Paul's Teaching on Christian Marriage.
A. Greco Roman culture believed communal and domestic order to be directly related.
B. Domestic order maintained by male headship exercising sweeping authority.
C. Women, children, and slaves were subordinate to husbands, parents, owners.
D. Christianity taught that all of the above were brothers and sisters in Christ.
E. This was seen as subversive and disruptive of society and had to be addressed.
II. The Content of Paul's Teaching on Christian Marriage.
A. The Spiritual dynamics of Christian marriage.
1. The command-"be filled with the Spirit." 5:18
2. The consequences-"speaking," "singing," "thanking," "submitting."
