The Temple of Aphrodite dominated Corinth geographically, economically and morally. But Corinthian Jews were more interested in the Jerusalem Temple built on the ancient site where many Christians, Jews and Muslims believe Abraham offered Isaac. Paul had another temple in mind when he taught the Corinthians.

I. The Church as God's Temple-A Significant Concept.

A. The Jerusalem Temple.
1. Prefigured in the Tabernacle.
a. The tent of meeting. Exodus 33:7 11

2. Promised in the Wilderness. Deuteronomy 12:5
a. The place the Lord…will choose…

b. To put His name there… See Exodus 3:14f

c. For His dwelling. See Isaiah 66:1 4

3. Planned by King David. 1 Kings 8:17

Part 4: God's People

The children of Israel were called "the people of God" and eventually the church became known by the same term. What does it mean to be "God's people?"

I. The Privileges of God's People. vv. 9 10

A. The privilege of being "a people."
1. A chosen people.
a. God's choice of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

b. God's choice of Israel out of the nations. See Deuteronomy 7

c. God's choice of the church. 1 Peter 1:1

2. A holy people.
a. Distinctive in identity.

b. Distinguished by purity.

Part 5: God's Treasure
Series: Understanding The Church

Titus 2:11-15

God called the nation of Israel, His "treasured possession." Or as one theologian described her "The people which constitutes the crown jewel of God." Paul applied this language to the church. We are "God's treasure." But why?

I. God's Desire for His Treasure.

A. People who are in need of "salvation."
1. Because they are actively engaged in "ungodliness." v. 12

2. Because they are powerfully influenced by "worldliness."

3. Because they are inwardly controlled by "wickedness.¬" v. 14; 3:3

B. People who have been offered salvation.
1. "The grace of God…has appeared." v. 11

2. "The kindness and love of God our Savior." 3:4
