I. Considering the Conscience.
A. Its meaning.
1. Conscience = Lat. "con" and "scio"; Gk. "syn" and "eidenai" = "know together."
2. Consciousness = "awareness of."
3. O.T. no word, but see 2 Samuel 24:10; Psalm 32:1 5; 51:1 9.
4. N.T. appears 30 times.
B. Its role.
1. It is innate. Romans 2:14-15
2. It is universal.
3. It distinguishes right from wrong.
4. It encourages toward right, away from wrong.
5. It judges retroactively-condemning, commending.

Jesus was particularly concerned about Peter. He told him one day that he had prayed specifically "that your faith may not fail" (Luke 22:32). It is good to know that Jesus, our great high priest, prays for us, too.
