Many people find the pursuit of happiness as frustrating as it is tiring. Joy is a Christian distinctive that even those who are experiencing difficulties may enjoy.

I. The Joy that Comes Through Faith.

A. The ground of faith. v. 6a
1. The revelation of the Father's mercy.

2. The result of the Son's ministry.

3. The reality of the Spirit's presence.
N.B. "in this" relates to vv. 1-5.

B. The growth of faith. vv. 6b-7
1. Growth in value-"greater than gold."

2. Growth in validity-"proved genuine."

3. Growth in valor-"all kinds of trials."

Part 4: Taking Salvation Seriously

Peter, because of his circumstances, was particularly concerned that his attention should be focused on lasting values, and he wanted to ensure that other believers would take their salvation seriously. This is a prime need today.

I. The Curse of Casualness.

A. The casualness of disbelief.

B. The casualness of disinterest.

C. The casualness of disdain.
Note: This casualness can be on an institutional or individual level.

II. The Strength of Seriousness.

A. Seriousness and a sense of privilege.
1. The intensity of the prophets' search. v. 10
a. The limits of their revelation. e.g. Simeon, Luke 2:23

b. The uncertainty of their illumination. e.g. John, Matthew 11:3
