1 Samuel 16:13-23
The dramatic difference between David's rise and Saul's fall was directly related to their differing experience of the Spirit of the Lord. This fact should serve to remind God's people of the importance of their relationship with the Holy Spirit.
I. Saul's Experience of the Spirit.
A. The Spirit of the Lord came upon him. 1 Samuel 10:10
1. The evidence of God's choice.
a. Signs given to assure Saul. 1 Samuel 10:2-3
b. Spiritual gifts given to establish credibility. 1 Samuel 10:10; cf. Acts 2:4, 10:44-46
2. The means of God's empowering. 1 Samuel 11:6
a. Courage in the place of fear. Judges 6:34; cf. Acts 4:8
b. Strength in the place of weakness. Judges 15:14; cf. 2 Corinthians 12:9
3. The agent of God's changing. 1 Samuel 10:6; cf. Galatians 5:19-23
B. The Spirit of the Lord had departed from him. 1 Samuel 16:14
1. Unsuitable for God's purpose.
a. Called to be king he proved inadequate.
b. "You expect more from a leader." cf. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

When the little man takes on City Hall and wins, people enjoy the spectacle. There's something particularly exciting about seeing the underdog survive and triumph. David showed how it is done and the Christian church needs to learn the lesson well.
I. The Context Needs to Be Understood.
A. Philistines vs. Israel.
1. "Uncircumcised" vs. covenant people. v. 26; Genesis 17:1 14
2. Dagon, Baal zebub vs. "living God." vv. 26, 43
3. Defiant vs. demoralized. vv. 10-11
4. Outspoken vs. outgunned. vv. 4 9; 1 Samuel 13:19 22
B. Secular society vs. people of God.
1. An intellectual battle for truth.
2. A moral battle for righteousness.
3. A physical battle for survival.
4. An ideological battle for freedom.
C. Goliath vs. David.
