The World Congress on Evangelism held in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1974 was followed in 1989 by a second congress in Manila, Philippines. The theme was: "Calling the whole Church to take the whole Gospel to the whole world."
I. The Whole Gospel.
A. Gospel Defined.
"…good news of God's salvation from the powers of evil, the establishment of His eternal Kingdom and His final victory over everything which defies His purpose." Manila Manifesto, p. 3
1. The condition of mankind.
a. Dignified because of divine image.
b. Corrupted because of sin's power.
c. Condemned because of God's holiness.
2. The uniqueness of Christ.
"He alone is the Incarnate Son, the Savior, the Lord and the Judge, and He alone, with the Father and the Spirit, is worthy of the worship, faith and obedience of all people." Manila Manifesto, p. 4
B. Gospel Defended.
1. Against false gospels-denying sin, judgment and Christ.
2. Against half gospels-minimizing sin, maximizing human effort.
3. Against relativism-all religions, spiritualities equally valid.

Ephesians 1:3-14
It is one thing to "call the whole Church to take the whole Gospel to the whole world," but it is another matter entirely to motivate the Church to do it. What does it take?
I. We Need to Be Clear About Objectives.
The objectives of evangelism are:
A. To glorify God. Ephesians 1:6-12; 2:4 5
1. By explaining His purpose and person.
2. By exalting His Son.
B. To build the Church. Ephesians 2:11 18
1. The Church-a company of redeemed.
2. The Church-an alternative society.
C. To meet human need. Ephesians 2:1 5
1. The human condition-real need.
2. The human experience-felt need.
D. To instruct the uninformed. Ephesians 4:17 19
1. Futile thinking needs truth.
2. Darkened understanding needs light.
II. We Need to Be Concerned About Obligations.
