While dining with a Pharisee Jesus was visited by a woman of questionable morals. He used the opportunity to tell a story that illustrates the meaning of forgiveness.
I. The Failure that Needs Forgiveness.
A. We are in God's debt.
B. We are responsible for our debt.
C. We have incurred various degrees of debt. v. 41
D. We are incapable of repaying our debt. v. 42
E. Sin is the nature of our debt. v. 48
F. Judgment is the result of our debt.
G. Forgiveness is our only hope.
II. The Faith that Receives Forgiveness.
A. Only God can forgive sins. v. 49

It is not uncommon for preachers to be criticized by their hearers, but Jesus pointed out that hearers are always evaluated by the word preached. Soil may evaluate seed, but seed also evaluated soil.
I. The Seed Is the Word.
A. The general abilities of seed.
1. Seminal abilities-life of the embryo.
2. Survival abilities-enduring elements.
3. Dispersal abilities-innumerable ways of "scattering."
4. Potential abilities-capacity to be dormant.
B. The special abilities of the Word.
1. Word of the Kingdom. Matthew 13:19
2. Word of God. v. 11
3. Word made flesh. John 1:14
4. Word of Life. Philippians 2:16
