Matthew 16:13-20
That Jesus existed is not disputed. Who He was, is. Philosopher, Reformer, Teacher, Revolutionary, or Prophet are some suggestions. The Bible insists on more. Jesus is the Christ.
I. The Significance of His Names.
Note: Jesus is His Name; Christ is His title (as Queen Elizabeth or Chairman Mao).
A. Jesus. Matthew 1:18-25
1. A name of eternal significance (Jesus from Joshua-lit. Jehovah Savior).
2. A name of universal significance-He came to HIS PEOPLE.
3. A name of social significance-He came to SAVE.
4. A name of spiritual significance-He saves from SIN.
B. Christ.
Note: There are many called Jesus but only One entitled to be called THE CHRIST.
1. Christ (Anointed) translates "Messiah" in LXX (Septuagint).
a. Messiah prefigured by Moses (Deuteronomy 18:15), Cyrus (Isaiah 45:1), and David (Psalm 45:4-7).

Part 4: The Son of God

Scripture teaches not only that Jesus is the Christ but also the Son of God. This introduces the doctrine of the Trinity, which is basic to Christian belief.
Note: Doctrine of the Trinity.
1. There is One God. Deuteronomy 6:4
2. This God subsists in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. See Genesis 1:26; Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Luke 3:21-23
3. These three have same attributes and substance and are therefore equal. See
1 Timothy 1:17; 1 John 5:20; Hebrews 9:14
I. The Eternal Glory of the Son. John 1:1-5
A. His Eternal Being in the beginning.
B. His relationship to the Father…with the Father.
C. His Divinity…was God.
D. His creativity…all things.
