John 10:1-18
The "life to the full" of which Jesus spoke, He also called "life eternal," adding "Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent" (17:3). Intimacy with God is the way to get a life.
I. Desiring Intimacy with God.
A. The death of desire for intimacy with God.
1. Human apathy-"There is no one who seeks God." Romans 3:9f
a. He isn't knowable.
b. He isn't desirable.
2. Human autonomy-"Lovers of themselves." 2 Timothy 3:2f
a. He may be an inconvenience.
b. He might become an embarrassment.
3. Human aspirations-"Lovers of money…pleasure…than God."
B. The birth of desire for intimacy with God.
1. The desire for personal satisfaction.
a. The longing for belonging.
b. The need for forgiveness.

John's gospel was written so that people might "believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing (they) may have life in his name" (20:31). Belief not only shapes life styles, it determines eternal issues, too (3:16).
I. An Explanation of Belief.
A. Belief in general living.
1. We learn by making faith assumptions, e.g. scientific method.
2. We survive by being dependent, e.g. the frailty of life.
3. We relate by developing trust, e.g. the place of promises.
B. Belief in spiritual life.
1. A matter of credibility.
a. The credibility of Scripture. 2:22
b. The credibility of Christ. 4:21; 6:30
2. A matter of content. "Believe that…" Gk. hoti.
a. Belief is not a vague feeling.
b. Belief is acknowledgement of fact. 20:31; 6:69
