The Thessalonians had learned a lot about the future but there was still some confusion about death and what happens after death. So the missionaries gave further instruction so the believers would look ahead with joy.
I. Encouraging People in Their Grieving.
A. Grief and death's awesome reality. v. 13
1. People know that death is inevitable-"those who fall asleep."
2. People who approach death in ignorance.
a. Wishful thinking.
b. Resigned fatalism.

The teaching that the Thessalonians had received concerning "the coming of the Lord" had very practical ramifications. The Church has always needed encouragement to stay alert to them.
I. Alert to Being Well Informed. vv. 1 3
A. Informed about "the day of the Lord."
1. Prophetic information-"great and dreadful day." Amos 5:18; Malachi 4:5
2. Apostolic information-"great and glorious day." Acts 2:20
a. Jesus is Lord. Acts 2:36
b. Jesus is judge. Acts 17:31

As we have seen it is too easy for people to become spiritually sleepy and sloppy. To counteract these tendencies we are to "encourage" and "build each other up" (5:11). Today we look at practical ways of doing this.
I. Encouraging People Working in Leadership. vv. 12-13
A. Recognition of leadership.
1. They work hard-service not status.
2. They are "over you in the Lord." Romans 12:8; 16:2; 1 Timothy 3:4, 12; 5:17; Titus 3:8, 14
3. They "admonish you"-cf. v. 14 "warn."
B. Response to leadership.
1. Respect their hard work.
