The American Psychologist reports that over the last four decades of research the top two "terminal values" of the American public are "a world at peace" and "family security" (Vol. 44 No. 5 May 1989:778). Given the extent of international conflict and domestic breakdown, we have a long way to go. The promise of "peace on earth" needs to be revisited.
