Matthew 5:13
Jesus told His disciples, "You are the salt of the earth." He was telling them that they were to play a significant role in their society. The same applies to the church today. How this role is to be fulfilled is the subject before us today.
I. The Status of Being Salt.
A. Being salt is not optional.

Jesus continued to outline His expectations of His disciples by telling them that in addition to being the salt of the earth they were the light of the world. How does this apply to us today?

B. The "continuation" aspect.
1. The prophetic promise. Isaiah 42:6 7

Ephesians 2:8-10
Jesus called his disciples to be salt and light. Their effectiveness was related to their capacity for producing "good deeds" which would so impress people that they would praise the "Father in heaven." How does this apply to us?
I. "Good Deeds" Are Not the Basis of Salvation.
A. Salvation is God's remedy for the human dilemma.
1. Salvation from spiritual deadness. v. 1
