1 Corinthians 1:1-9
The Corinthian church was a marvel and a mess like so many churches and so many lives. Paul's intention in the First Epistle to the Corinthians is to preserve the marvel and clear up the mess-praiseworthy intentions but fraught with problems.
I. Why Bother Getting Things Straight?
A. Because of the strategic position of the Church.
Note: "Church of God at Corinth" (v. 2).
B. Because of the special purposes of Christ.

1. Calling work-"called saints." v. 2
2. Confirming work-"testimony confirmed in you…" v. 6
3. Charismatic work-"behind in no gift…" v. 7

The church at Corinth was not living up to its potential. Differences had led to quarreling and divisions were threatening. Paul spoke to the issue with great urgency and intensity.
I. The Curse of Division.
A. It dishonors the name of Christ.
B. It dismantles the work of Christ.
C. It disgusts the enemies of Christ.
D. It discourages the servants of Christ.
E. It disorganizes the church of Christ.
F. It disappoints the Spirit of Christ.
II. The Cause of Division.
