Christian marriage in pagan society is a challenge second to none. Mixed marriage in a pagan society is even more difficult. The Corinthians knew a lot about both and needed some clarification. The situation in our day is not dissimilar.
I. Christian Marriage in Pagan Society. v. 10-11
A. The pagan approach to marriage.
1. A low view of women.
2. A preference for male company.
3. A reluctance to commit.
4. A casual attitude to divorce.
5. A means of perpetuating a name.
B. The Christian view of marriage.
1. Originated as divine institution.
2. Perpetuated under divine instruction.
Note: "command"-a military term. No divorce.
