Christians have a personal relationship to Christ that affects every aspect of their lives. They also have a relationship to other believers that is lived out in the context of the church. Because of its unique role, the church needs to ensure that Christians are aware of the importance of "church life."
I. The Unique Design of the Church.
A. A "Called out" Community.
Note: "Church" vv. 13, 22. Gk. "Ekklesia", lit. "called out."
1. Hebrew idea-theocracy. See Acts 7:38
A society called by God to Himself.
2. Greek idea-democracy. Acts. 19:32, 39, 41
A society free to govern its affairs.
3. Christian idea-theocratic democracy.
A free society governed by God.
B. A "come together" community. vv. 17-18, 20, 33-34
1. The president of the community-Christ the Lord.
2. The purpose of the community-service.
3. The power of the community-love.
4. The principles of the community-faith and obedience.
II. The Ugly Discrepancies in the Church.
A. Becoming worse instead of better. v. 17
