Christians know that the Lord instituted the Communion service on the night of His betrayal and that He expects them to participate regularly in this act of worship. The Church has traditionally perpetuated this observance, but individuals have not always known what to do at the Communion-not least, the Corinthians. Here are some things to do.

I. Take an Upward Look.

Note: "I received of the Lord…" v. 23
A. The Communion has divine origins.
B. The Communion has divine authority-"this do."
C. The Communion has divine significance.
Note: The Communion-an antidote to secularism.

II. Take a Backward Look.

Note: "The night in which He was betrayed…" v. 23
A. The events of the evening.

B. The explanation of the events.
1. The explanation of the foot washing.

2. The explanation of the broken bread.

3. The explanation of the cup.

One of the ministries of the Holy Spirit is to dispense "gifts" to believers. He had done this in superlative fashion in Corinth. But both those of Hebrew and Greek background had understood these gifts more in terms of culture than Christ, so chaos had resulted. Paul endeavors to clarify the situation.

I. The Corinthian Abuse of Spiritual Gifts.

A. The excesses of Greek paganism.
Note: "carried away" (v. 2) possible demonism.

B. The extremes of Hebrew holy men.
e.g. Ezekiel, David, Samson, Isaiah

C. The experience of Corinthian church.
1. Attracted to the unusual. vv. 8-10
