Part 55: Things to Do
Series: Getting Things Straight
Stuart Briscoe
1 Corinthians 16:13-20

In the midst of his concluding personal remarks, Paul suddenly released a veritable barrage of instructions to the Corinthians. These imperatives are all in the present tense, which indicates that they should be regarded as ongoing instructions that should be a regular part of their lifestyle.

I. Be Alert… "Watch ye…" v. 13

A. Be alert to the Return of Christ. Matthew 24:42
B. Be alert to the resourcefulness of Satan. 1 Peter 5:8
C. Be alert to the reasons for decay. Revelation 3:2

II. Be Stable… "Stand fast…" v. 13

A. Be stable enough to make a stand.

B. Be stable enough to maintain your stand.
1. In the faith. v. 13

2. In the Lord. Philippians 4:1

3. In the Spirit. Philippians 1:2

Part 56: Maranatha
Series: Getting Things Straight
Stuart Briscoe
1 Corinthians 16:21-24

In the final passage of 1 Corinthians it is interesting to note that three non-English words have survived the transition. Each is important. "Maranatha" is Aramaic, "Anathema" is Greek and "Amen" is Hebrew.

I. "Maranatha": A Word of Confession.

Note: "Mar" = "Lord", "an" = "our", "atha" = "come, has come, will
come."
A. A confession of Incarnation…"our Lord has come."
1. Jesus came as Lord. ("Mar" shows primitive teaching.)

2. Jesus came as Christ. See 1 John 4:2

3. Jesus should be loved for coming. v. 22

B. A confession of Identification…"our Lord is present."
1. Present as President of the Church.

2. Present as Dispenser of Grace. v. 23

C. A confession of Anticipation…"our Lord will come."
