Romans 8:14-27
Having explained in principle what happens when believers receive the "Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead", Paul now leads into a practical explanation of life in the Spirit.
I. Living in the Good of the Family. vv. 14-17
Note family words: Sons, children, adoption, heirs, "Abba Father."
A. The experience of the leading of the Spirit. v. 14
1. Leading-"Agontai": "The Spirit drags the man where the flesh
would fain not go" (Godet).
2. Leading-An evidence of Sonship.
3. Leading-An obligation of sons.
4. Leading-Alert to prompting, obedient to control. E.g. Luke 4:1
B. The experience of liberty through the Spirit. v. 15a
1. Fear creates bondage.
2. Spirit gives freedom. E.g. 2 Timothy 1:7

Part 14: What Shall We Say?

Romans 8:28-39
At this point the tone of the epistle changed. Having carefully and systematically laid out this theological statement, the apostle now adopts a preaching style, and with a series of questions, he asks for a response. This response should include the following.
I. We Are More than Convinced. 8:28-30
A. That God has a plan.
1. Man made in God's image. Genesis 1:26
2. Man reproduced in his own image. Genesis 5:3
3. Christ came in God's image. Hebrews 1:3
4. He will be "firstborn" of those conformed to His image. v. 29
5. "We shall be like Him." 1 John 3:2
B. That God has a procedure.
1. Those He foreknew He predestined… v. 29
a. Divine foreknowledge.
i. To know in advance what people will do.
ii. To know intimately some people and not others.
