Part 4: Handling Temptation

Modern man thinks of "temptation" as a "seduction", but the term when used in the Bible means "to put a person to the test", whether benevolently-to show his qualities or malevolently-to expose his weaknesses. We need a biblical view of temptation.
I. Temptation Needs to Be Understood.
A. Its origins.
1. God puts His people to the test.
a. To reveal their true condition. Genesis 22:1-2
b. To purify their faith. 1 Peter 1:6-7
c. To produce character. James 1:2-4
d. To assure them of His love. Romans 5:3ff
2. Satan tempts God's people.
a. By crushing them. Job 1:11ff
b. By encouraging wrong satisfaction of valid desires.
c. By making them complacent and careless. Galatians 6:1
d. By misrepresenting God. Matthew 4:5ff
